The Dayboro Men’s Shed enjoyed a lively burst of colour, chrome and conversation when members of the Brisbane Vintage Auto Club rolled in for a goodwill visit. Their lineup of classics turned plenty of heads, and the combination of visiting cars and our own local classics quickly drew a steady crowd from around the Shed.

The standout of the day was a beautifully restored 1926 Oakland, a machine with more stories than most of us. After being trapped in a shipping container during a flood, it was rescued, rebuilt and now gleams like it’s ready for another century on the road. It drew a steady stream of admirers — and at least one member was overheard saying, “If only I aged that well.”

Adding to the charm was a tidy 1949 MG Y type, an example of the post war move to smoother lines. The locally owned 1960 RollsRoyce Silver Cloud Series 2, 6280cc V8 added a touch of unexpected elegance to the gravel carpark, proving that Dayboro can do classy when it wants to. A favourite for many was the 1964 MG Midget, the sort of car that makes you want to put on a flat cap and take the long way home reminding a few members of their more playful youth.

With several of our members being classiccar enthusiasts themselves, the visit quickly turned into a friendly exchange of restoration tips, tall tales and goodnatured envy. For some, it rekindled old passions; for others, it sparked new ones.

As always, the Men’s Shed welcomes anyone with an interest — whether it’s vintage cars, woodworking, metalwork or simply good company and a cuppa. There’s always room for one more at the bench
